从技术领域分布来看(图7),美国在关键底层技术、农业食品和能源环保领域的专利技术处于领先地位,而中国则在医药健康和化工材料领域占据专利数量优势。日本在各应用领域的专利数量稳居第三,德国、法国和英国专利申请数量与前三名存在显著差距。从子领域领先机构的分布来看(表2),美国拥有7家领先机构,中国有3家,波兰、日本和德国各有2家,法国、韩国、英国、瑞士、荷兰和丹麦各有1家。值得注意的是,国外以企业为主要申请主体,而中国则主要由高校和研究所主导。
